Age Divisions
Virtual Competition: A participant’s age is determined by their age on the competition’s published closing date.
Live Competition: A participant’s age is determined by their age as of January 1st of the competition year, which may differ from their age on the day of the event.
An Ensemble age division is determined by the average age of all active participants in the ensemble. An ensemble participant is considered to be active when dancing in at least 75% of the performance. “Human Props” will not be calculated towards the average age.
Any Ensemble with four or more dancers over the maximum division age will automatically be placed in the higher age category.
The Duet and Trio age division is determined by the eldest participant/member of the duet or trio.
Classical Ballet Pas de Deux is open to 11 years of age & older.
In the event that there are insufficient entries for any age division, CDC may combine two age divisions.

Each judge at California Dance Classics evaluates the participant’s live stage performance using a
100-point scoring system. The final score is calculated as the average of all tabulated judge scores.
Judging criteria include:
• Technical execution
• Artistic expression
• Musicality
• Stage presence
• Overall performance quality
Awards are merit-based and determined solely by score, not by placement within a group.
The highest attainable score is 100.
Award Levels
• Gold Award – First Prize
• Silver Award – Second Prize
• Bronze Award – Third Prize
• Special Honorable Mention – Fourth Prize
• Honorable Mention – Fifth Prize
These awards are presented in every performance category and age division only when a qualifying score is met. The integrity of the scoring process ensures a fair and transparent competition for all dancers.
All judging decisions are final.
California Dance Classics is a youth ballet and contemporary dance competition offering fair and detailed performance rules, scoring systems, and repertoire options to support dancer development across all age levels.
